The Origin of the Names Władysławowo, Gwiazda Morza, Velaves, Gwiazda Północy

Władysławowo – formerly known in the 1920s as Wielka Wieś – was visited by General Józef Haller on February 11, 1920, following the symbolic Marriage of Poland with the Sea, which took place in Puck on February 10, 1920. It was from Władysławowo that the cutter Gwiazda Morza ("Seestern"), under the command of skipper Jakub Myślisz, set sail.

The fishing vessel Gwiazda Morza of a Kashubian fisherman was stationed in Hel. Therefore, Myślisz, who learned about the voyage from the “Blue General,” had to travel on foot from Wielka Wieś to the tip of the Hel Peninsula to set sail to meet the Polish commander.

To recreate this event, the vessel Helios sailed from the Hel port to Władysławowo. On board was Mirosław Kuklik, director of the Puck Regional Museum, who took on the role of the skipper. The skipper, aboard the decorated cutter, reached Władysławowo without obstacles, where the memorable events of 1920 were reconstructed. In 2017, the cutter did not need to be hacked free from the ice, and in modern Władysławowo it was easy to dock at the port without navigating the cold Baltic waters. From there, the modern Jakub Myślisz sailed out with the Polish flag.

Another interesting fact – in 2000, geodetic measurements in Jastrzębia Góra determined Poland’s northernmost point at 54°50'11”. This point is marked by a commemorative obelisk called “Gwiazda Północy” (North Star). This is where the name of our first private penthouse in the Gwiazda Morza complex comes from.
